If you’re looking for an affordable and classic flooring option, engineered hardwood could be the perfect thing for you. Engineered hardwood flooring offers the timeless elegance of hardwood combined with the easy installation of laminate. At Floor Coverings International Arch City, we provide expert design advice and installation of engineered hardwood flooring to the greater St. Louis area.

Background

Each plank of engineered hardwood is constructed with multiple thin layers that usually consist of solid hardwoods on top and dense fiber boards on the bottom. The planks come prefinished with a variety of stain options. The top layer of solid hardwood could be any number of styles including oak, maple, cherry, hickory and much more.

Benefits

Thanks to the layer of fiber board, engineered hardwood is more moisture-resistant than solid hardwood. This mean that you can even install it in moisture-prone basements and bathrooms. The limited use of solid hardwood also makes these planks an eco-friendly option. Each piece requires a much smaller percentage of a living tree. Lastly, engineered hardwood is much faster to install than solid hardwood. This is thanks to two primary things. First, the planks come prefinished, so you won’t have to wait for them to dry for any number of weeks. Secondly, the planks are installed like laminate, which is a much more straight-forward process. Sometimes they planks can even be installed on top of existing base flooring.

Drawbacks

Unlike solid hardwood, you cannot refinish your engineered hardwood floors multiple times over the years. The thin top layer of solid hardwood can easily be worn through after one or two refinishings. It’s best to refinish individual spots that have become worn, or to replace parts of the floor in leu of refinishing the entire space. This means that the lifespan of engineered hardwood floors can be less than solid hardwood in some cases. The other thing to consider is that the options for engineered hardwood planks can be more limited than solid hardwood. If you want something very unique, you may have to stick with solid hardwood floors.
